I HEART NEW YORK BY LINDSEY KELK : BOOK REVIEW

January 10, 2013

"When you're running away from heartbreak, there's only one place to go .."
When Angela catches her boyfriend with another woman at her best friend's wedding, she's heartbroken and desperate to run away. With little more than a crumpled bridesmaid dress, a pair of Louboutins, and her passport in hand, Angela decides to jump on a plane for .. NYC! Settling into a cute hotel and quickly bonding with benevolent concierge Jenny-a chatterbox Oprah wannabe with room for a new bestfriend- Angela heads out for a New York makeover, some serious retail therapy and a whirlwind tour of the city. Before she knows it, she's dating two sexy guys and blogging about her Big Apple escapades for a real fashion magazine. But while it's one thing telling readers about your romantic dilemmas, it's another working them out for yourself. Angela has fallen head over heels for the city that never sleeps, but does she heart New York more than home?

This book indeed was out from back then in 2009, but that was the UK released and I've just discovered the US one about a month ago. So, it's not my fault (entirely) for reading it too late, pardon me. This is my first time reading Lindsey Kelk's books (one among those stack of another "I Heart .." books, clearly) and I can easily tell that she writes such a candy. You're supposed to enjoy its sweetness but not minding how it's done. As simple as that.

Why would I say such thing? Because from my experience reading the 300-pages full of unrealistic crap about how Angela survives so fucking easily & effortlessly in New York, like everything has already set for her, is pathetic. The entire story has been spoiled on the back of the cover (yes, the synopsis says it all), not to mention the far too predictable and Marc Jacobs-ish plot. "What is this girl doing really? What am I reading?" are the most proper questions I ask myself repeatedly. Angela is hardly a teen, but Kelk tells her story like she is that one spoiled teenage girl, playing around with two gorgeous (and seem to be everbody's crush) guys and writing about them in her cheesy column, while the two know about the blog (and of course, the fact that Angela dates two guys) and didn't give any fuck about it, it's non-sense! And how a girl, in her right mind, write about her relationship with not one, but two guys and brag about it?! And have I mentioned that Angela's relationship(s) aren't that inviting, longing and proofed to be lack of chemistry? As well as uninspiring?

Eventhough I hate so many aspects in this book, I do enjoy the city tour and shopping splendid that Kelk offers through Angela's eyes. I do love NYC (so much) and it's a great thing to read such incredible (and real enough) presentments through the choices of words. The yellow taxis, Magnolia Bakery, Empire State Building, Central Park, you name it. And I love how Kelk presents the starter in such pace, which is intriguing. But, I do wish for some twists and tiny suprises though.

What stands out in this book probably is the friendship that is offered. I love Jenny-Angela's fast-bound. I love how the sweet & confused characters of Angela blend with Jenny's spontaneus and active persona. Though I thought that Angela's groupies seem to be unreal to me, but I still love it. Jenny is my favorite character by far; she brings delightment to the story, balancing Angela's soon-to-be-found identity and will. I do love Angela for being such a shy and unreasonable, she has the one thing that makes me rooted up to her. But -there's always a "but", Angela doesn't match the term "heroine of the book".

Finally, I can say that this book is fun and enjoyable, though you may not want to think everything from your sane perspection. Bottom line, I can't say if I recommend you to read it, but by reading my descriptions above, you can choose whether to read it or not. Enjoy!
